Good morning, TIH Community — welcome to another TIH Weekly Skill Drop.

Have you ever made a decision based on what you thought was happening, only to discover that the reality was different?

That is why research matters.

Whether you're a student, entrepreneur, professional, researcher, policymaker, or community leader, knowing how to gather and use reliable information can significantly improve the quality of your decisions.

Research Insight

Research helps us move from “I think” to “the evidence suggests.”

1. Start With the Right Question

Before collecting information, define exactly what you want to understand.

✕ “People aren't participating.”

✓ “What factors are preventing participants from attending our programme consistently?”

A clear question gives your research direction.

2. Know What Data You Need

Primary Data — information you collect directly through surveys, interviews, focus groups, observations, and similar methods.

Secondary Data — existing information from credible reports, journals, databases, government publications, organisational records, and previous research.

Don't collect new data if credible existing evidence can already answer your question.

3. Choose the Right Method

Your research question should determine your method.

Survey: structured responses from many people
Interview: deeper individual experiences
Focus Group: perspectives through group discussion
Observation: behaviours and activities
Document Review: existing records and evidence

Use the method that best answers your question — not simply the most sophisticated one.

4. Ask Better Questions

Avoid leading questions.

✕ “Don't you agree that this programme improved your skills?”

✓ “To what extent, if any, has this programme affected your skills?”

Good research questions invite genuine responses rather than pushing people toward yours.

5. Protect the Quality & Integrity of Your Data

Before trusting your findings, ask:

Is the information relevant?
Is it accurate?
Is it sufficiently complete?
Did we hear from the right people?
Could bias be affecting the results?

When collecting personal information:

Respect privacy
Obtain appropriate consent
Protect people's information
Never fabricate or manipulate results

Good research requires integrity.

6. Don't Just Collect Data — Find the Insight

A spreadsheet containing 500 responses is still just data.

What patterns are emerging?
What do the numbers tell us?
What themes keep appearing?
What limitations should we acknowledge?
What have we learned?
What should we do differently?

The Real Research Journey

DATA → INFORMATION → INSIGHT → DECISION → ACTION

The TIH Research Check

Before conducting research, answer these six questions:

Problem: What are we trying to understand?
Question: What specifically do we need to know?
Data: What evidence do we need?
Source: Who or what can provide it?
Method: How will we collect it?
Decision: What will we do with what we learn?

If you can answer these clearly, you already have the foundation of a basic research plan.

TIH Success Insight

Curiosity asks the question.
Research provides the structure.
Data provides the evidence.
Analysis creates understanding.
Good decisions turn understanding into impact.

Today's TIH Challenge

Imagine TIH wants to research:

“What is the biggest challenge preventing young people from acquiring and applying new professional skills?”

If you were the researcher, what one question would you ask young people to help us understand this problem?

Is it clear?
Is it neutral?
Would the answer provide useful insight?

Final Thought

Don't collect information simply because you can.

Collect the right evidence because you know what you need to understand.

Better Questions → Better Evidence → Better Decisions → Better Outcomes.
